New York – This week Familia es Familia – a project of Freedom to Marry – released an ad in Texas highlighting supermajority Latino support for the freedom to marry. The ad will run in San Antonio, El Paso, McAllen, and Laredo on Univision stations. The ad can be viewed in English here: https://youtu.be/ICKjBS7p8zs and in Spanish here: https://youtu.be/5Bd2UVlgtYI
“Fairness and family are core values to Latinos,” said Sergio Lopez, Freedom to Marry’s director of Latino programming and San Antonio native. “As we build toward a ruling from the Supreme Court, it’s more important than ever to include Latinos in the conversation about marriage, in Texas and throughout the country. All loving and committed couples deserve the freedom to marry.”
Texas is one of thirteen states where same-sex couples continue to be denied the freedom to marry. The ad airs shortly after advocates and lawmakers in Texas halted all proposed anti-gay legislation. The Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on a case that could end the remaining bans on the freedom to marry nationwide.
A transcript in English appears below, followed by a transcript in Spanish:
They are our aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren. Our friends, neighbors, and people we care about. Latinos don't turn our backs on family. That's why over 60% of Latinos support the freedom to marry for our gay family members. Latinos are ready for the freedom to marry. It’s time.
### Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
